Lately, there have been some exciting things happening at school. A few weeks ago, second grade got the opportunity to meet the Buccaneers old head coach, Tony Dungy! We all gathered in the media center and waited for him to come in. All of my students were super excited. We talked to them about him before he came to read, to make sure they knew who he was. Some of my students knew who he was because they like football, but others had never heard of him before. Either way, they were happy to meet someone famous. We had them write "Thank You" letters to him, thanking him for coming to read to them.
When he arrived in the media center all of my students were so happy! He talked to us about reading and how it is important to read. Every Tuesday he goes around to elementary schools and reads to the students. He is also an author of children's books, and he brought one to read to the students. They listened intently as he read. At the end of the story, he talked to our students about them moral of the story and what they learned. At the end of the reading, he gave each of our students a book! They were so thankful. It was an awesome experience.
We even got to take pictures and I got an autographed book!
I think red ribbon week is an important week in school. I think it is beneficial for students to be aware of the dangers of drugs, and teaching students about drugs early is a way to get them to avoid drugs. Although my class did not participate in red ribbon week as much as I would have hoped, I still think they learned a little about drugs and their dangers.
In my own classroom, I plan on making a big deal out of red ribbon week. I want my students to be aware of the dangers and participate in any of the schools events. Having the students participate in the events will hopefully make the students passionate about avoiding drugs.
